The Government’s Role in Healing Healthcare with Catharine Young
When Catharine Young, Ph.D., decided to become a scientist, she had no idea she would ever work for government agencies like the Department of Defense. But by working at such influential organizations, she learned about their power to solve some of healthcare’s biggest problems.
Young’s career path led her to the White House’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, where she helps advance the mission of decreasing cancer deaths by 50% over the next 25 years.
As Young notes in this episode, “[Cancer] is a disease that touches all of us. And when we think about mission-driven work, this to me really fulfills that. Because I know that the work that we do every day at the Biden Cancer Moonshot will have impact around the world in some capacity.”
In our fourth episode of the season, we talk with Catharine Young about the role of government in healing healthcare.

Why does the narrator in this video switch from speaking to the patient to provider(s) so often and inappropriately?

Don't forget that just because a doctor has written and sent a prescription to a pharmacy, it does not mean it is approved then and there. The insurance has the right to take up to 3 or 5 or 7 days to process, I believe they will hold to that. Some PA's take me 5 minutes, some take me 5 days...the ones that are problematic.

I have been doing PAs for 4 years at our office. They ebb and flow as they come in. They come in from many resources/places. They are confusing at best. The insurance cherry picks their questions and some are ridiculous. Most require me to work through patient notes and decipher what drugs patients have tried/failed. This is one of the most consistent questions insurance asks. They are no closer to understanding what the patient has been through nor do they have the patient case notes at their disposal. There are also insurance companies that make it mandatory to submit case notes. It is a hard job and I have a feeling I will still be doing many hours per week of insurance talks because in many cases the insurance is expired, inaccurate coverage or has a problem with the tier of the drug. It will never be as easy as a push of a button, and our providers in our office leave all of it up to me along with the guilt I feel when a claim is denied!

😢 I'm going to start a job doing prior auths, it'll be my first time doing thus type of job. Is it as overwhelming as it sounds? Now I'm scared it'll be too confusing and hard for me

Prescription pre-authoritarianism is nothing but a bonafide violation of the eighth amendment in the form of cruel and unusual punishment Insurance companies are not the kings and all deciders over a citizens medical treatment and well being Whatever pile of bureaucratic shit that has empowered this unconstitutionality needs to be abolished period. There’s absolutely no benefit to this medically other than purposefully delaying a patient’s treatment for the sake of inflicting more undo stress and worry patients without any medical significance or justification This garbage is cruel and unusual punishment and it needs to be punished because It’s neither moral, constitutional, or medically justifiable. The pharmaceutical and medical industries are playing big business with the lives and wellbeing of the patient. This has become a cancer upon society and it must be cut away.

requiring prior authorization is a way to delay needed treatment, leave the patient with non-working substitute and potentially kill the helpless patient who does not get the treatment he needs while the administrators shuffle paper ... I went through this nightmare - and a very expensive one...

The best solution to prior authorization is to just say "no, I don't do prior authorization". Physicians, quit doing these. Recognize that the health insurers and Big Pharma are stealing your life time that you will never get back. It is a truly evil device that should be discarded and never allowed to be used again.
